Bella Hadid Just Went Full Prinny Mode

Liverpool is famed for many things – the Beatles, the Titanic, Steven Gerrard – but its greatest cultural export might be the woman the BBC interviewed on the first day of Glastonbury in 2023, who arrived at Worthy Farm with a busted shopping trolley and her hair still set in rollers from a curly blow that same morning. It was an almost heroic commitment to glamour, and in one of the most hostile environments known to man, a feat of Scouse engineering. (Unlike the Titanic, it hadn’t sunk.)

I’m not suggesting that Bella Hadid – photographed yesterday afternoon while en route to a photoshoot, wrapped in a fuzzy coat, Chanel sunglasses and rollers – was directly inspired by that now-viral vox pop. But she had, nonetheless, arrived at the Liverpool look. (Which, I should add, is a matter of record, not flagrant stereotyping.) “Scouse girls did it first,” says Vogue’s resident Liverpudlian and social media manager Hannah Daly. “Despite living in London for four years, the North West will always be home, and the one thing that brings more comfort than it probably should is seeing all the prinnies [Scouse girls] in their rollers walking around Liverpool One, getting prepped for their Saturday night out,” she adds. “While some people might turn their nose up at the sight – snore! – you can guarantee these girls will be the most glam, and have the most fun, later that evening.”

Bella has, after all, long drawn from the most unexpected niches of British style – there was a good six months in 2022 when she was rarely seen without Lonsdale zip-ups, Burberry sets and Specsavers frames – and there does seem to be a growing global interest in all things Merseyside. Last month, Timothée Chalamet cropped up on an EsDeeKid track and in its accompanying video, followed by Owen Cooper concluding his Golden Globes acceptance speech with “You’ll never walk alone”, referencing the anthem sung from the terraces at Anfield. Someone, please, get Bella down to Concert Square.
