Back in the 2010s, tabloid celebrity magazines were constantly splashed with headlines like “X as You’ve Never Seen Them Before” – usually subtext for a grainy, unflattering snap and some kind of public meltdown. It was that phrase that flickered through my mind last week as I watched Emma Stone slowly massage chalky white sunscreen across her bald head. Not a Britney in 2007 moment, but a scene from Bugonia, Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest fever dream of a film, which stars Stone “as you’ve never seen her”.

But the magic of a good glam squad (and, well, hair growth) works fast, and the actress is back to her A-list ways, attending the Governors Awards last night in an off-the-shoulder Louis Vuitton gown that laughed in the face of the November forecast. While it feels like only five minutes ago we were searching heatwave outfits, we’re now firmly in festive RSVPs territory, with Stone’s collarbone-exposing look serving as a reminder that practicality has never been a priority when it comes to a party season wardrobe.
