Can You Please Spell Gabbana? Miranda Priestly Would Approve Of Emily Blunt’s Vintage
After a few years of playing dishevelled tortured heroines, or wearing jaunty hats in her Mary Poppins era, order has officially been restored. Emily Blunt will shortly return to screens as former Runway first assistant Emily Charlton, and she’s already dressing the part. The star was on the red carpet on Monday night sporting an archival Dolce & Gabbana jacket – first worn by Kate Moss on the runway back in 1997 – while promoing her film The Smashing Machine.
Blunt’s on-screen transformation for this film – in which she stars opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is very Carmela Soprano, complete with chunky French tips and Bump-it bouffants. But off screen, her press tour wardrobe owes more to the 2000s fashion girl. Her recent D&G look brings to mind the now legendary musings of Plum Sykes: “Who’s going to wear a chiffon Dolce & Gabbana skirt like this to the office? Only me, or only someone who works at Vogue, you know?”

Since The Smashing Machine’s premiere at Venice Film Festival, Blunt has cycled through the archives, reminding us of the power of sheer going out tops, and the Old Hollywood glam of head-to-toe sequins in a halterneck Elisabetta Franchi dress. She’s also reached for David Koma’s signature party dresses, and – perhaps most memorably – some pastel-blue Schiaparelli.
