Dakota Johnson Gives The Naked Dress A Much-Needed Autumn Update
Dakota Johnson is a devotee of all things sheer and sexy – the Materialists star is a see-through material girl through and through, and a lot of the time, it’s Gucci.
Johnson just appeared at the Zurich Film Festival, where she was set to receive the Golden Eye Award. For the occasion, she wore a high neck, long-sleeve gown with a drop waist and a full, gathered skirt in a brilliant shade of almost purple blue. The custom Gucci dress incorporated a sheer embroidered fabric that clung to her body and stopped at the hips. Johnson styled it simply with some silver and black cocktail rings, wearing her signature bangs, and her waist-length hair loose.
Styled by Kate Young, Johnson has taken a brand agnostic approach to naked dressing. For a more casual take on the celebrity fave sheer trend, she’s worn a see-through Khaite bodysuit and jeans. Her back catalogue of transparent red-carpet gowns includes a floral Gucci dress worn with black underwear for the Kering Foundation’s Caring For Women event, and a sinewy brown panelled Nensi Dojaka dress.

This most recent look gives the sheer dress a decidedly autumn-appropriate update: Johnson’s heavier skirt gives the look a more seasonal, dare I say sensible, bent. It’s also a shock of colour which my colleague Hannah Jackson has dubbed electric violet. (A shade that Greta Lee stepped out in earlier this week, albeit more suited and booted in Luar). From Dries Van Noten to Miu Miu, these ’80s, opulent-leaning shades of purple were all over the autumn/winter 2025 runways, and spring/summer 2026 seems to be continuing the trend too, from a pleated Prada look in Milan to a sheer and silky take at Colleen Allen. Gucci’s new artistic director Demna looks set to give Johnson the kind of dramatic, sensual red-carpet moments she loves.
So with that, don’t expect naked dressing to go anywhere anytime soon – Dakota Johnson still has much to say on the matter, especially with gala and awards seasons very much in motion now.
