19 Of The Best Vitamin C Serums For Brighter Skin In 2025

Vitamin C is considered by most experts to be one of the mainstays of a good skincare routine. Well tolerated by most people and most skin types, the best vitamin C (often in serum form) is a potent active that can tackle myriad different issues including brightening dark spots, promoting a more even skin tone and boosting collagen production for improved firmness. “I look at vitamin C as that little black dress in your closet,” Samantha Mims, aesthetician and founder of Dermasaa, tells British Vogue. “It’s definitely one of those things you must have. It works to boost circulation, amplify the skin’s complexion, and stimulate collagen production.”

Always on the hunt for products that will help to brighten and firm, testing out the best vitamin C serums was a job that many of the Vogue team and our panel of experts were happy to help with. To put each one through its paces, all the products featured have been used for at least a month and have been rated according to how well they performed and showed results, but also additional extras like texture, absorbability, and scent, all of which contribute to the overall product experience.

With that in mind, all the 21 vitamin C serums you see below have been approved by Vogue and will help you on your way to getting brighter, firmer, healthier skin in 2025.

Best for antioxidant protection: Medik8 C-Tetra Advanced Vitamin C Gel-Serum

Image may contain: Bottle, Shaker, Lotion, and Cosmetics

Medik8

C-Tetra Advanced Vitamin C Gel-Serum

  • Why we love it: If you’re already a fan of Medik8’s range of vitamin C serums, you’ll love the latest addition to the roster. While it offers a punchy dose of stabilised vitamin C (20 per cent in this case), the real secret to its efficacy lies in the adjoining ingredients. While acetyl zingerone, an omni antioxidant with hefty studies that it protects against London pollution, delivers further protection against free radicals (as well as enhancing the vitamin C), it’s the inclusion of phtyo-exosomes that’s exciting. Chosen because they pose zero skin barrier disruption, they work hard to ensure the formula is highly tolerated and able to get to where it needs to go without issue.
  • Key ingredients: vitamin C, acetyl zingerone, phyto exosomes
  • Best for: Unlike the brand’s C-Tetra Luxe serum which is more of an oil-based serum, anyone who prefers a lighter, more milky formula will adore this. It sinks in instantly and provides a great base for make-up too. Designed for hyperpigmentation, dull and sensitive skin
  • Benefits: Brightening, hydrating, firming, smoothing
  • How to apply: two to three pumps every morning
  • Size: 30 ml

Best for dark spots: Garnier Vitamin C Brightening Serum

Image may contain: Bottle

Garnier

Vitamin C Brightening Serum

  • Key ingredients: Vitamin C, niacinamide, salicylic acid, Melasyl™
  • Benefits: Brightening, hydrating, refining
  • Best for: Hyperpigmentation, dull skin, blemish-prone skin
  • How to apply: One full dropper morning and evening
  • Size: 30ml

Why we love it: Consider this an upgrade on what was an already excellent formula. Now formulated with an even more potent 4 per cent vitamin C complex, it also includes niacinamide to help improve the evenness of skin tone and salicylic acid to keep pores clear of debris and reduce blemishes. The brand’s signature dark spot eradicator Melasyl™ is also on hand to brighten and prevent dark spots from forming in the first place.

Best for fast absorption: DoSe by VH C-Deep Vitamin C Serum

Image may contain: Bottle, Cosmetics, Perfume, and Lotion

Victoria Health

DoSe by VH C-Deep Vitamin C Serum

  • Key ingredients: Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, squalane
  • Benefits: Brightening, lightweight, firming
  • Best for: Dullness, sagging skin, sensitive or oily skin
  • How to apply: One to two pumps morning and evening
  • Size: 30ml

Why we love it: The stable yet punchy form of tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate used is what allows this formula to penetrate deeper than most vitamin C serums. The result is a reduction and softening of fine lines and wrinkles thanks to the promotion of collagen and elastin formation. To keep skin supple and hydrated and prevent transepidermal moisture loss, there’s plenty of squalane.

Best for acne and blemish prone skin: 4.5.6 Skin Sevenly Delight

4.5.6 Skin Sevenly Delight Hyperpigmentation Correcting Serum

  • Key ingredients: vitamin C complex, niacinamide, glutathione, azelaic acid
  • Benefits: softens skin texture, fights acne, boo
  • Best for: easing breakouts on acne-prone skin, fading hyperpigmentation and increasing radiance
  • How to apply: Apply 1-2 pumps morning and night.
  • Size: 30ml

Why we love it: Boasting an expert blend of vitamin C, niacinamide and azelaic acid, choose this serum to brighten your dark marks and in the process, it will do so much more. Its ingredient list is home to nearly every skincare hero there is, from antibacterial azelaic acid that quells acne, to tyronisase inhibitors that reduce excess melanin production and pore minimising powerhouses like niacinamide. “There is no stronger review for a serum than being so good that you order a top up as soon as it runs out, and that’s exactly what this serum made me do.” says Tracy Achonwa, Vogue beauty writer. “It has a watery consistency that absorbs almost immediately leaving no sticky residue behind, so it really is as delightful to use as its name suggests. Best of all, it actually works, and quickly at that – I noticed improvements to acne scars I have had for years within the first two weeks. Thanks no doubt to its cohort of complementary actives, it’s the single most effective vitamin C serum I have tried.”

FAQs

What does a vitamin C serum do?

The beauty of a good vitamin C serum is not just how powerful it is, but that it can help with a range of different issues. “Vitamin C and its derivatives reduce tyrosinase activity, the enzyme responsible for producing melanin, thereby lightening hyperpigmentation,” explains dermatologist Dr Azadeh Shirazi. “It also enhances protection against UV rays that stimulate melanin production.” Its status as a powerful antioxidant also means it works on premature ageing. “Vitamin C neutralises free radicals that lead to premature skin ageing thereby helping support skin structures,” says Shirazi, adding that it is “important for collagen biosynthesis, an important structural protein our skin loses with age.”

What should I look for in a vitamin C serum?

Generally speaking, you’re looking for a formula with a stable form of vitamin C that can deliver sufficient antioxidant protection – of L-ascorbic acid or tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. Experts say you’re typically looking for a vitamin C in the 10-20 per cent range. Dr Paula Bourelly meanwhile recommends products with ingredients like arbutin and ubiquinone, as they both have “brightening properties which help to lighten brown spots and, as antioxidants, the ascorbic acid and tocopherol add another layer of defence to traditional sunscreens.”

How should I use a vitamin C serum?

Mims adds that there’s not necessarily a right or wrong way when it comes to applying the serum – what’s more important is what you do afterward. “Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from environmental factors such as pollution and UV light. So whether you’re deciding to use your serum in the morning, evening, or both, it’s important you’re following up with a layer of broad spectrum sunscreen daily.”

Is vitamin C serum safe for sensitive skin?

Vitamin C is safe for sensitive skin, but some formulas may cause more irritation than others. If you have particularly sensitive skin, look for a product that contains other ingredients that help minimise barrier disruption, as well as formulas that use encapsulated vitamin C. That means the active is enclosed within a protective shell, usually made of lipids or polymers, to enhance its stability and improve delivery to the skin.

Can I use vitamin C with retinol or niacinamide?

You can use vitamin C with both retinol and niacinamide, but it’s best to use vitamin C and retinol at different times of the day to avoid potential irritation. Most experts recommend using vitamin C in the morning thanks to its protective antioxidant properties daytime while retinol, which can increase sun sensitivity, is usually used at night. Niacinamide can be used both morning and night.

How do I store a vitamin C serum?

First up, look at the product you’re buying as the product’s packaging makes all the difference. Dark or opaque bottles help reduce the oxidation that could occur when vitamin C gets exposed to sunlight or heat. Your precious formula is best stored in a cool, dark environment for best usage.
