The Parisian-Approved Herbal Tea For Better Sleep And Digestion

A few days ago, I read a newsletter from the make-up artist Violette that reminded me how wonderful a cup of chamomile tea is after dinner. She mentioned that in France, it’s a ritual that many swear by for better sleep – and I couldn’t agree more.

Ending the day with a herbal tea is a gentle way to aid digestion, improve sleep and even curb dessert cravings. As psychonutritionist Itziar Digón once told me, “Teas are a great way to finish meals — calorie-free but full of digestive benefits.” I’ve tried many blends, but chamomile and liquorice works best for me, leaving me feeling lighter at night and refreshed in the morning. Liquorice’s natural sweetness also helps curb my chocolate cravings.

Our grandmothers knew what they were doing. Chamomile has been used for centuries to calm the body and soothe digestion – it was popular long before ginger and turmeric became popular. According to nutritionist Laura Parada, chamomile is not just mildly sedative, but also packed with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antispasmodic properties. It eases gas, heartburn and stomach cramps, relaxes digestive muscles and even helps reduce menstrual pain. No wonder I wake up with a flatter, more comfortable stomach whenever I drink it at night.

Liquorice root is a great addition. It has antibacterial properties, reduces acid reflux, supports digestion and soothes inflammation in the digestive tract. It can help with bloating and digestion, while reducing gas and even mild constipation thanks to its gentle laxative effect. Together, chamomile and liquorice are a powerhouse duo — a simple, soothing ritual that offers plenty of health benefits.
