Sarah Jessica Parker’s Blended Roots Are A Lesson In Growing Out Gracefully

In Hollywood, greyness has become something to celebrate. From Salma Hayek and her silver strands making an appearance in Paris earlier this year, to Andie MacDowell’s multi-dimensional pewter curls in Cannes, more and more high-profile women are embracing their hair’s natural transition.

One stalwart of the grey-and-chic community is Sarah Jessica Parker, who has long been blending her natural regrowth with her signature blonde hair. Spotted last night at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in New York, Parker wore her long blonde hair in a pinned-back, half-up, half-down style. The clever part? Her natural greys, peeking out from her hairline and scalp, blended beautifully with the lighter sections of her hair, creating a soft, balayage-type effect.

Forever the blueprint for embracing natural beauty, Parker’s approach is both refreshing and incredibly functional. Rather than rushing to the hairdresser for each new lightning bolt of grey, Parker’s method of grey-blending (rather than grey eradicating) stretches time between appointments, limits the amount of colour you need to deposit onto the hair, and also just looks cool.

As for what to ask for, hairstylist and founder of Arkive Headcare, Adam Reed, previously told British Vogue that the best approach is to focus on “scattering the strands with highlights until you go completely grey”. This way, he says, the existing grey pieces will blend more naturally with the lighter, highlighted slices of hair. For non-highlighters, his best advice is to ask for a colour blend. “Finding a colour that blends in with what grey you have and your natural hair – as they are two totally different colours – is important, but it’s also key to choose a colour that you like.”
