Dakota Johnson Capes Up In Autumn’s Chicest Outerwear Trend
We all know Dakota Johnson loves a sheer moment, but she’s also someone who enjoys sleek, chic minimalism when the occasion calls for it. Appearing at the Zurich Film Festival last week, Johnson opted for the latter approach, and chose to wear one of autumn’s most ladylike and sophisticated emerging trends.
Johnson, who is styled by Kate Young, took to the stage in Switzerland in look 39 from Maximilian Davis’s Ferragamo autumn/winter 2025 collection: a steel grey sweater in a draped, almost silky fabric that featured a black silk cape, and a black structured miniskirt. She styled it with silver drop earrings, sheer black tights, and chunky platform boots by Saint Laurent.
The cape (like the stole, the poncho and the pashmina) is having a bit of a comeback this season, having been spotted across the autumn 2025 runways. At Chloé, it’s decidedly more boho, in creams, ruffles and sinewy fabrics. Scarf coats and draped, layered outerwear were also found at Calvin Klein, Burberry and Bottega Veneta. Jennifer Lawrence was photographed recently wearing a furry midnight-blue stole over her top and jeans in a fun, high-low take, while Kendall Jenner opted for a striking leather jacket with a draped overlay by Phoebe Philo. And of course, if you go vintage, you’ll find a treasure trove of capes from Hermès and sculpturally layered jackets from Yohji Yamamoto and Rick Owens.
Johnson was attending Zurich Film Festival to receive the Golden Eye Award, and to present her latest movie, Splitsville. On the first evening, she opted for her go-to naked dress style and wore a custom, electric blue-toned Gucci dress with a sheer, embroidered top half and a drop waist. With its full skirt and long sleeves, it was what some might call a season-appropriate update to the beloved sheer dress trend, which isn’t going away anytime soon, thanks to Dakota, Margot Robbie and others.
